We’re back to bring you some fantastic events and activities from the Sai Wan neighbourhood. From fashion shows and Acro yoga to forums on music, education and entrepreneurship in Hong Kong. There is plenty of adventure to be had around Sai Ying Pun and Kennedy Town this week.

Hotel Jen X theDesk – Street and Seek Watercolour Charity Workshop

Street & Seek Watercolour Charity Workshop
Saturday 4th and 11th, 3 pm – 5 pm

Hotel Jen Hong Kong by Shangri-La presents two sections of the Street & Seek Watercolour Workshops for good hope in early November. A young prominent artist, Elaine Chiu, will guide the participants in tailor-making their own postcard in watercolour.

A workshop fee of HK$80 per person includes the postcard, materials and soothing drinks. 50% of the fee will be donated to the Heep Hong Society to support children with developmental and learning needs. Spread the love and your generous support will brighten up the lives of many in need. See you soon!

Apart from the workshop, from now till November 30, 2017, 12 pieces of Elaine’s works are featured in the hotel’s public areas to introduce her explorations of the city’s up-and-coming spots in the Western District and showcasing our neighbourhood’s unique characteristics.

Tuesday 31st October, 8 pm – 10 pm

Get your dancing shoes on for a night of blues and swing! It doesn’t matter if you don’t know the difference between the Jive and the Jitterbug. Hong Kong Blues and Swing Dancing host open level classes that are perfect for beginners all the way up to those who can West Coast Swing with their eyes closed.

West Coast Swing is a popular form of swing dancing done to pop, soul, R&B, blues, and many other styles of music. The class starts off easy breezy with basic patterns and then focuses on developing your technique. So, go and take your dancing to the next level. Classes are discounted for first-timers, reduced to $50 if it is your initial class.

If like us, the idea of an authentic middle eastern meal makes you dream of delicious spices, tahini, eggplant and olive oil, then this cooking class is for you.
Olive Leaf Hong Kong offers a variety of authentic middle eastern vegan and vegetarian cooking classes at various locations around Hong Kong.

This week’s menu includes lemon, green pepper, eggplant, vegetables and sumac salads, along with olive oil bread and a delectable date dessert. The price of $600 includes your lunch, drinks, snack and recipes.

Wednesday 1st November, 7 pm – 9 pm

Exploring the positive impact that music can have on all facets of child development, this public talk will focus on the importance of musical education for young children. The talk is hosted by ‘Let There Be Music Hong Kong’ and is part of a series of workshops run by the organisation focused on demonstrating the cultural learning opportunities that music can offer our youth of today.

Topics of discussion include a review of different musical schools of thought and how to bring a holistic approach to music education that meets the need of children’s development, with some rhythm exercises and singing in between.The fee is $150 per person and you can register at

Wednesday 1st November, 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm

Combining jazz and hip-hop, New Jazz is the younger, cooler cousin of the jazz we know and love. Labelled “the infinite extension of body structure and the entire freedom of body movement,” beginners are welcome to explore the beauty of New Jazz in a workshop hosted by the Hong Kong University New College. The fee is $50 per person. Both men and women keen to try their hand at this fresh style of boogie are welcome.

Our friends at Ghood, the Western District’s neighbourhood LGBTQ initiative, are meeting up in Kennedy Town to share ideas on costumes, props and banners in preparation for their participation at the upcoming Hong Kong Pride Parade on 25 November 2017.

Head on over to the YellowPurple Cafe and Bar to meet some new people, enjoy a drink or two and become a part of building Ghood’s community spirit while you are at it!

Literature fans don’t miss this. Now in it’s 17th year, the Hong Kong International Literary Festival runs from 3rd to 12th November. Featuring overseas and local authors, the Festival offers a ten-day programme of literary events. With venues across the city, our neighbourhood is lucky to have many events taking place at Hong Kong University. Be sure to check out the programme online and book early.

Thursday 2nd, 8:15 pm – 10 pm

Ben and Jenny’s community spirit is clear with their “pay as you wish” philosophy for all attendees at their yoga classes. Try their all-levels Vinyasa Class and feel the benefits of coordinating movement with breath to flow from one pose to another in classic Vinyasa style.

Suggested donations are around $100, which makes this is a great option for a yoga class at a more affordable price point. There are mats available, but you are also welcome to bring your own.

Friday 3rd, 7:30 pm – 9 pm

For the more virtuous among us, spend your Friday night at Kennedy Town Pool for some yoga and swimming action. Unlock the relaxation that comes from perfecting you breathing while you swim.

The session is aimed at those who are learning to swim, or who wish to swim for longer distances continuously. The class starts with a 30-minute yoga class to get your body and mind ready for the swimming session. No yoga expertise is required. You’ll need your swim gear, goggles and a swimming cap. Paddleboard and yoga mat are recommended.

The price is $400 for the workshop, plus general pool admission fee. The workshop fee is donated to HK Paws Guardian Limited, an animal welfare organisation dedicated to helping save animals.

Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th, 12 PM – 3 pm

Learn to fly at this weekend’s Acro Yoga workshop – well, almost. Hosted by the yoga gurus at the Sai Ying Pun studio IAM YOGA IAM, 

AcroYoga is a fun way to incorporate acrobatic movements into yoga using techniques. It looks easy but let’s wait and see! Get ready for a challenge and to lift yourself, and be lifted!

Part of two of the workshop is on Sunday 5th. But in this workshop, you cover basic poses and transitions that form the foundation of all Acro Yoga practice. Attendance at both workshops is recommended but not essential. Neither is bringing a partner, although if you reserve your place with a friend, you’ll both get a 20% discount. 

The cost is $450 for the Saturday or $800 for both weekend days.

For the art lovers, check out enLIGHTenment – Qu Leilei’s First Solo Ink Exhibition in Hong Kong. The exhibition is running at 3812 Gallery until 11 November 2017 and exhibits two series of ink-on-paper works by Qu Leilei, the master of chiaroscuro in ink. Make sure you don’t miss this.

Continuing until Sunday 19th October

Stephen Yeung’s paintings depict our city’s world-famous scenery. Yeung’s passion for Hong Kong is shown through his work showing the harbour and other places around town. In particular, Yeung focuses on different types of weather. Whether mist, rain or storms, the artist’s wish is for us all to live in peace and harmony. You can RSVP for the opening reception at 3 pm on Saturday 28th. The exhibition continues until Sunday 19th November.
