A nude model, plenty of wine and a life drawing workshop in theDesk’s courtyard made for a lively Sunday afternoon event that’s set to return to our space soon…

Wannabe artists packed the courtyard at theDesk co-working, events and exhibition space in Sai Wan on Sunday afternoon for a life drawing workshop with a dashing nude model. Hong Kong’s NuDD group organised the lively event – and, immediately following the workshop, co-founder Ha Yat Sing told us he’s already planning the next one in our space to build upon this successful first workshop.

NuDD, which stands for ‘nude drink and draw’, is an experimental life drawing and sometime performance group that mixes art with social activities. It was launched two years ago, however over the past year it’s been all quiet due to the two co-founders’ work commitments. So this class at the weekend, called ‘Earthing’, was the first one back after more than 12 months. Sing says: “We had about 20 people who enjoyed the workshop on Sunday, each one drawing model Winston Lau in different poses and everyone enjoying the wine we provided and the relaxed social atmosphere. It was a really successful event in theDesk’s courtyard, which is a perfect escape from the busy world outside and a perfect space for a life drawing workshop!”

Sing continues: “Winston’s final 20-minute feature ‘movement pose’, which used his own meditative music as the background, was performed against the rustic concrete bamboo wall in the courtyard. It somehow brought us to a different world and injected some new energy into the event. It was an excellent experience for all and there were many paintings and quick sketches created with lots of overlapping lines as the artists were trying to capture Winston’s movements.”

NuDD is holding its next workshop at a dance studio in Sheung Wan or Sai Ying Pun on July 29 or 30. Sing says it’s in the planning stages right now but contact him direct if you want to find out more. As for the next life drawing workshop at theDesk, he says the group is ‘hoping to come back a couple of weeks after that’. So, watch this space. Keep your eyes (and your clothes?) peeled…
